Sharee and I have been on several cruises to the Caribbean, but have never participated in the excursions offered at the ports. However, when we heard about being able to volunteer once you arrive at a port, it intrigue us. The first port for which you can do “voluntourism” will be the Dominican Republic in April 2016 . Awesome idea by president of fathom, Tara Russell. Here is what she stated in the Black Enterprise online article.
“Carnival’s mission is to marry social needs with market demand while creating a business model that lasts. We are living in times when the corporate world must connect with the social enterprise world,” said Tara Russell, Carnival’s Global Impact Lead. fathom will emphasize that changing the world is fun. “As travelers escape the day-to-day, they can also make a difference,” Russell adds.
UPDATE: fathom will also serve Cuba starting May 2016. More details in this USAToday article.

Sharee and I will set sail on a Mediterranean cruise in September 2016 on Carnival Vista. We have port stops in Italy: Sicily, Naples, Rome, & Florence; France: Marseilles; and Spain: Palma de Mallorca. We would love to hear your suggestions on a volunteer opportunity on at least one of those ports.
On your next vacation would you consider volunteering?
